Troubleshooting
Fixes for common problems: missing tools, agents not tracked, empty usage limits, refused tokens, blocked sessions, updates and Linux.
Short fixes for the problems people hit most. If yours is not here, see "Get help" at the end.
Tools and agents
Claude Code or Git is missing or too old
Kanbell needs Git 2.45 or newer and Claude Code 2.1.80 or newer. Codex needs 0.150.0 or newer, Gemini CLI 0.39.0 or newer. A version newer than the ones Kanbell was tested with shows a warning but is not blocked. Install or update the tool, then click Recheck in Settings › About.
An agent isn't tracked
- Custom command profile: if the command runs an agent, click Track as {agent} Session.
- Codex: trust Kanbell's hooks once with
/hooks. Trust only the "session flags" ones, never "Trust all". - Gemini CLI: the folder must be trusted in Gemini CLI, and hooks must not be disabled.
Usage limits show nothing
Limits exist for Claude Code and Codex only. For Claude Code you need version 2.1.80 or newer, a Pro or Max plan, and at least one reply in a Kanbell session.
A question can't be answered from the panel
The panel answers Claude Code AskUserQuestion questions with Claude Code 2.1.293 or newer. It handles one single-choice question (with or without option previews), 2 to 4 single-choice questions without previews, or one multi-select question without previews. Anything else says "This question has to be answered in the Terminal." Codex and Gemini CLI questions are always answered in the terminal. Permissions can be opened from the panel, not approved.
Sessions
Sessions stopped after a restart
After a restart, sessions come back as finished. Click Resume to continue. Sessions also stop when you close the project's main window.
"$KANBELL_CLI" is not found
The variable only exists in terminals opened by Kanbell, not in Terminal.app or iTerm. Run the command from a Kanbell session.
Sessions don't start after the trial
The 7-day trial is over. Your projects, notes and files still work. Go to Settings › License and click Subscribe, or I Have a Key, then Activate. See Settings, license and updates.
Accounts and updates
GitHub or GitLab refuses the token
- GitHub: a fine-grained token needs "Issues: read and write". A classic token needs the "repo" scope to edit.
- GitLab: use a
glpat-token.apigives read and write,read_apiread only. Tokens withsudooradmin_modeare refused. - Self-hosted GitLab: https only, GitLab 15.5 or newer, and the certificate must be trusted by your system. There is no bypass.
- Linux: tokens are refused without a real keyring.
See Integrations.
Updates don't install on macOS
Kanbell must run from a writable location such as /Applications. Move it there and open it from there.
The Linux app doesn't start or has no tray icon
Follow the checks in Install on Linux. The tray icon only shows if your desktop has a tray: Ubuntu does, plain GNOME needs the AppIndicator extension.
