Settings, license and updates
The Settings sections, themes and colors, the About pane, the 7-day trial and the license, and how updates work on macOS and on Linux.
Open Settings with ⌘, (Linux: Ctrl+,). This page covers the sections that are not explained elsewhere: appearance, About, the license and updates.
Find a setting
Settings has these sections:
- GitHub and GitLab: connect your accounts. See Integrations.
- Projects: the Board source of each project. See Board.
- Profiles: the profiles you launch sessions with. See Sessions.
- Notifications: see Notifications.
- Appearance, License and About: below.
Change the look
In Appearance:
- Pick a Theme: Kanbell, Ocean or Knight.
- Pick the Colors: System, Light or Dark.
- Pick the Session view: Terminal or Focus. See Agents and subagents.
Kanbell follows your system language: French or English, otherwise English. There is no language switch in the app.
Check your tools in About
About shows the versions of Kanbell, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and Git. After you install or update one of them, click Recheck.
Also in About:
- Show tips again brings back the small boxes that explain each screen.
- Component Licenses lists the licenses of the components Kanbell uses.
- Check for Updates (macOS).
In the Help menu, Copy Diagnostics and Show Logs help when you report a problem.
Start or end your license
Kanbell has a 7-day free trial. No card, no account. The trial starts on its own and stays fully local.
After 7 days, Kanbell costs 12 CHF per month or 96 CHF per year, paid through Polar. At checkout you can pay the equivalent in USD, EUR or GBP.
When the trial ends without a license, your projects, notes and files stay usable. Starting sessions is blocked.
In Settings › License:
- Click Subscribe to buy a license, or I Have a Key if you already have one.
- Paste the key and click Activate.
- Manage Subscription opens your subscription.
- Deactivate This Machine removes the license from this computer.
Kanbell checks the license when you activate or deactivate it, at launch without blocking, and every 24 hours. Without a connection, the license keeps working for 14 days.
Update Kanbell
On macOS
- Kanbell downloads updates in the background from GitHub Releases.
- To check now, go to Settings › About › Check for Updates.
- Click Restart to Update, or let the update install at the next restart.
Kanbell must run from a writable location such as /Applications, or updates can't install.
On Linux
There is no automatic update. Download the newer .deb and install it the same way as the first time. Your data stays. See Install on Linux.
