Install on Linux

Download the Kanbell .deb for Ubuntu or Debian, verify its checksum, install it with apt, start it, update it and fix AppArmor on Ubuntu 24.04.

Kanbell for Linux ships as a .deb package for Ubuntu and Debian, on amd64 and arm64. It comes from the release v1.5.0-linux. There is no automatic update on Linux.

What you need

  • Ubuntu or Debian, amd64 or arm64.
  • Claude Code 2.1.80 or newer. Codex CLI 0.150.0 and Gemini CLI 0.39.0 or newer if you use them.
  • Git 2.45 or newer, for the Git panel.
  • A real keyring if you want to connect GitHub or GitLab. Without one, Kanbell refuses to store the tokens.

Check your architecture

dpkg --print-architecture

It prints amd64 or arm64. Download the matching file.

Download

The release page lists the same files. Put the .deb and SHA256SUMS-linux in the same folder.

Verify the checksum

In that folder, run:

sha256sum --ignore-missing -c SHA256SUMS-linux

The line for your .deb must end with OK. If it does not, download the file again.

Install

sudo apt install ./kanbell_1.5.0_amd64.deb

On arm64, use ./kanbell_1.5.0_arm64.deb. apt pulls the libraries Kanbell needs (GTK, NSS, libsecret, curl and others).

Start

  1. Open Kanbell from the applications menu, or run kanbell in a terminal.
  2. If another program already owns /usr/bin/kanbell, run /opt/Kanbell/kanbell.

Never start Kanbell with --no-sandbox.

The tray icon

Kanbell's menu bar panel lives in the system tray on Linux. The icon only shows if your desktop provides a tray. Ubuntu does. Plain GNOME needs the AppIndicator extension.

Without a tray, closing the last window quits Kanbell. It asks first if agents are running.

Update

Kanbell does not update itself on Linux. Download the newer .deb and install it the same way. Your data stays.

Uninstall

sudo apt remove kanbell

Fix AppArmor on Ubuntu 24.04

On Ubuntu 24.04, Kanbell relies on the AppArmor profile /etc/apparmor.d/kanbell. If Kanbell does not start, check it:

  1. Check that the profile exists: ls /etc/apparmor.d/kanbell
  2. Check that it is loaded: sudo aa-status | grep kanbell
  3. If it is not loaded, load it: sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/kanbell
  4. If the file is missing, reinstall the package: sudo apt install --reinstall ./kanbell_1.5.0_amd64.deb (or the arm64 file).
