What is the best GUI for Claude Code in 2026?
If you only use Claude, start with Claude Code Desktop: it's Anthropic's own app, included in paid Claude plans, and it now runs on macOS, Windows and Linux (beta). If you want several agents in one free, open-source app, look at T3 Code, MonoCode or Nimbalyst. If you want to keep each agent in its real terminal, see the agents waiting for you in the menu bar, and skip accounts, look at Kanbell.
Every fact below comes from each product's own site, docs or repository, checked on November 7, 2026. These apps ship every week, so check again before you decide.
Chat view or terminal view
The first choice is not a feature, it's how you see the agent.
- Chat view. The app shows each session as a conversation, with its own input box, approval buttons and diff panes. Claude Code Desktop, T3 Code, MonoCode and Nimbalyst work this way. It's friendlier if you don't live in a terminal, and it lets one app show many different agents the same way.
- Terminal view. The app runs the CLI in a real terminal and organizes the terminals. Kanbell works this way: you see exactly what Claude Code shows, slash commands and all, and the app adds the overview around it. Kanbell also has an optional Focus view for Claude Code: a message box and the conversation over the terminal, which comes back for permissions.
The chat apps all have a built-in terminal next to the chat, and Nimbalyst can also run the Claude Code CLI instead of its own Claude agent.

Who each one is for
- Claude Code Desktop. You only use Claude and already pay for a plan. You get worktrees, diff review with comments, scheduled tasks, connectors and cloud sessions that keep going when your computer is off. Details: Kanbell vs Claude Code Desktop.
- T3 Code. You want one free, open-source app for many agents, on every platform, phone included. It's young: its README says it's very early. Details: Kanbell vs T3 Code.
- MonoCode. You want many agents, worktrees, an inbox fed by GitHub, GitLab, Linear or Jira, and automations, in an open-source app. Its README also says it's still early. Details: Kanbell vs MonoCode.
- Nimbalyst. You want agent sessions next to visual editors (markdown, diagrams, mockups, spreadsheets) and a tracker the agents update. Details: Kanbell vs Nimbalyst.
- Kanbell. You want the real CLIs, sorted by project, and to see and answer the agents waiting for you from the menu bar.
What Kanbell does differently
- Real terminals. Each agent runs in its own terminal, in tabs and split panes, sorted by project in a sidebar tree. The CLI runs unchanged in its terminal.
- Answer from the menu bar. The panel shows each waiting agent's question or the full command it wants to run, lets you answer some Claude Code questions right there, and
⌘⇧Jjumps to the next one. See answer your agents. - Claude Code on your server, signed in there. Kanbell starts Claude Code on a Linux machine over SSH, inside tmux, signed in on that machine. Close Kanbell or lose the connection and it keeps working; Kanbell reattaches on its own when you come back, with the questions that came in meanwhile in the menu bar panel. See remote machines.
- A board per project. Local, or synced with GitHub Issues or GitLab. See connect GitHub and GitLab.
- No account, no Kanbell server. See data and privacy.
What it doesn't do: no Windows or Intel Macs, no phone app, no worktree or merge flow, fewer agents than the open-source apps, and it's paid after the trial.

FAQ
Is there an official Claude Code GUI?
Yes. Claude Code Desktop is the Code tab of Anthropic's Claude desktop app. It needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise) and runs Claude Code only.
Which Claude Code GUIs are free and open source?
As of November 2026, per their repositories: T3 Code (MIT, free), MonoCode (MIT, no paid plan on its site) and Nimbalyst (MIT, free for individuals). Claude Code Desktop is included in paid Claude plans. Kanbell is paid after a 7-day trial.
Which one shows the real Claude Code terminal?
Kanbell runs each agent in its own terminal, exactly as the CLI shows it. Claude Code Desktop, T3 Code, MonoCode and Nimbalyst show sessions as a conversation, each with a built-in terminal beside it, and Nimbalyst offers the Claude Code CLI as an option.
Which ones run Claude Code on a remote server?
Claude Code Desktop (SSH and Anthropic cloud sessions), T3 Code (T3 Connect, Tailscale or SSH), MonoCode (SSH, experimental) and Kanbell (SSH to a Linux machine, in tmux). Nimbalyst doesn't document remote machines.
